Most of the time I go to the grocery store with a list. I am fast and efficient. In and out. This isn’t because I hate grocery shopping. This is so that I don’t buy everything I see, especially when I’m hungry. It’s like my stomach thinks I will never feed it and insists to my brain that we stock up.
When I go to the grocery store without a list, I end up with many random things in the basket. Case and point: birch beer. Did anyone else know this was a thing? So when I was standing in the drink aisle, list-free, I knew I had to have it.
It tastes kinda like its cousin root beer: caramelized and herbally. And it makes for a really interesting mixer. You could do rum in this, but I went for my current favorite bourbon. I’ve professed my love of bourbon here before. Oh and this would totally work with root beer.
Lime adds a necessary sour note to balance the sweetness of the soda.
Sometimes being list-free leads to good things.
Birch Beer and Bourbon
Juice of half a lime
1 oz bourbon (or dark rum)
Birch beer
Ice
Lime slices for garnish
Fill a tall glass with ice cubes. Squeeze in the juice of half a lime. Pour in bourbon and top with birch beer. Float lime slices on top. Serve with bendy straws.
Love it ! Thanks for that!
